Beti Bachao Beti Padhao: 11 Years of Empowering Girls

Why in news?

On 22 January 2026, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign completed eleven years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted its success in improving the status of girls across India.

Background

Launched on 22 January 2015, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (save the daughter, educate the daughter) is a joint initiative of the Ministries of Women and Child Development, Health and Family Welfare and Education. It seeks to address the declining child sex ratio, end gender discrimination and promote education and empowerment for girls.

Achievements

  • Improved sex ratio at birth: National data show that the number of girls per 1,000 boys has risen from about 918 (2014‑15) to around 930 by 2026. Districts that once had severe imbalances are showing more balanced ratios.
  • Public awareness: The campaign has mobilised millions of people through rallies, pledge drives, and social media, making the slogan “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” widely recognised.
  • Support for education: Scholarships, free textbooks and improved school facilities have helped more girls enrol and stay in school. States have adopted policies to make education friendlier for girls.
  • Convergence with other schemes: Programmes like Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (girl child savings) and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (maternity benefits) support families and complement the objectives of the campaign.

Significance

  • The scheme has changed attitudes towards daughters in many communities, challenging deep‑rooted gender biases.
  • Continued efforts in law enforcement, awareness and education will be needed to sustain and deepen these gains.
  • Empowering girls contributes to a more equitable and prosperous society.

Conclusion

After eleven years, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao has played a significant role in promoting gender equality. Ongoing community engagement and supportive policies will ensure that every girl has the opportunity to learn, thrive and contribute to the nation.
