Why in news?

Hundreds of saltwater crocodile hatchlings began leaving Bhitarkanika nests in early September. A forest official placed the annual emergence around 3 September. It was expected to continue for nearly two weeks. Officials reported finding 117 nesting sites during the 2026 breeding season.

What is happening in the nests?

The saltwater crocodile’s scientific name is Crocodylus porosus. Females build mound nests from vegetation, mud and other material. They select raised places less exposed to tidal flooding. Heat from the surroundings and decomposing vegetation supports incubation.

The current official account says females generally lay 50 to 60 eggs. It places emergence after about 70 to 80 days. These are broad field descriptions rather than fixed outcomes for every nest. Temperature, flooding, predation and nest condition can change success.

New hatchlings move towards nearby creeks and water bodies. Many will not survive their early life. Predators, food shortage and environmental stress create high natural mortality. A large hatching event therefore does not equal the same number of future adults.

Where is Bhitarkanika?

Bhitarkanika lies in Kendrapara district on Odisha’s north-eastern coast. It occupies a tidal delta shaped by the Brahmani and Baitarani river systems. The Dhamra estuary connects these waters with the Bay of Bengal. Creeks mix fresh and saline water.

Mangroves grow between land and tidal channels in this coastal setting. Their roots trap sediment and provide shelter for fish and young animals. The forest also reduces wave energy along exposed shores. Cyclones, sea-level change and altered river flow remain important pressures.

Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary and its coast lie towards the Bay of Bengal. That adjoining seascape is famous for olive ridley turtle nesting. Crocodile habitat lies mainly through sheltered rivers, creeks and mangrove wetlands. The two conservation landscapes are connected but not identical.

Different boundaries and legal designations

Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 672 square kilometres under the official notification record. A 145-square-kilometre core became Bhitarkanika National Park on 16 September 1998. These areas must not be exchanged. A national park has stricter legal protection than surrounding sanctuary areas.

Bhitarkanika Mangroves is also a Ramsar wetland of international importance. Its Ramsar record covers 65,000 hectares, equal to 650 square kilometres. India designated it on 19 August 2002. The Ramsar area is another wetland boundary, not the national park’s size.

These overlapping designations serve different purposes. Wildlife law regulates protected areas and activities. Ramsar recognition promotes the wise use of an internationally important wetland. Management must still work across rivers, villages and coastal waters beyond one boundary.

What population records show

A January 2026 reptile census recorded 1,858 crocodiles, according to the Divisional Forest Officer. Odisha’s 2025 forestry report counted 1,881 saltwater crocodiles. That earlier survey covered river systems under Rajnagar and Bhadrak wildlife divisions. The date and survey area must remain visible.

The 2025 total included 585 hatchlings and 405 yearlings. It also recorded 343 juveniles, 174 subadults and 374 adults. Those classes help show population structure. They should not be presented as the September 2026 hatchling count.

Differences between annual totals can reflect births, deaths, movement and survey conditions. They may also reflect the precise area counted. A single comparison cannot establish a biological trend. Consistent methods and several years provide stronger evidence.

Why Bhitarkanika suits saltwater crocodiles

The species can use saline, brackish and freshwater habitats. Bhitarkanika offers quiet creeks, mudbanks and mangrove cover. Tidal channels provide fish and other prey. Raised forest patches offer possible nesting ground above ordinary water levels.

Large crocodiles can move outside the park through connected waterways. This creates risks near fishing, bathing and livestock areas. Warning boards and seasonal access rules can reduce exposure. Local reporting and rapid response remain essential around village water points.

Nest protection should avoid unnecessary disturbance. A guarding female can become defensive near eggs or hatchlings. Tourism controls during breeding can protect visitors and wildlife. Staff also need safe boats, communication and trained monitoring teams.

Broader conservation priorities

Mangrove health supports the entire crocodile habitat. Upstream pollution and reduced freshwater can alter estuarine conditions. Embankments or dredging may change tidal circulation. Planning must therefore consider the wider delta as one connected hydrological system.

Annual census data should publish methods, boundaries and weather conditions. Nest counts need later hatching and survival observations. Conflict records can guide safer access points and compensation. Strong community participation makes these measures more practical.

Conclusion

The new hatchlings mark another breeding season within Bhitarkanika’s mangrove system. Nest numbers provide evidence, but they do not measure adult survival. The park, sanctuary and Ramsar site have different boundaries. Effective protection must connect crocodile monitoring with mangrove and river management. Human safety should remain central where crocodiles share waterways with settlements.
