BIMSTEC-India Marine Research Network Conference

Why in news?

The first regional conference of the BIMSTEC-India Marine Research Network (BIMReN) took place in Kochi, Kerala, from 4-6 November 2025. Scientists, policymakers and students from Bay of Bengal countries gathered to share knowledge and strengthen cooperation in sustainable marine research. The event underscored the growing importance of the Bay of Bengal region for food security and blue-economy opportunities.

Background

  • BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) is a regional organisation comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. It aims to foster cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, environment and fisheries.
  • The BIMReN initiative, announced at the BIMSTEC Summit in Colombo in 2022 and launched by India's Ministry of External Affairs in 2024, provides grants for joint research projects and split-site PhD programmes among member countries. It also supports twinning of laboratories and field studies.

Key features of the 2025 conference

  • The conference connected 25 institutions and more than 50 researchers from BIMSTEC nations. Participants discussed marine challenges, ecosystem health, fisheries management and climate change.
  • It aligned with India's broader regional strategies such as the Neighbourhood First, Act East, Indo-Pacific and MAHASAGAR (Maritime Heritage) policies, emphasising cooperation and shared prosperity.
  • Sessions highlighted the need for sustainable exploitation of marine resources in the Bay of Bengal, which accounts for about 6 percent of the world's fish catch. Participants stressed the importance of protecting marine biodiversity while supporting coastal communities.
  • The gathering fostered collaboration among young scientists, focusing on technology transfer, data sharing and harmonised policies for the blue economy.

Significance

  • By linking researchers across the region, the network seeks to generate scientific knowledge and build capacity to address marine pollution, overfishing and climate-induced changes.
  • The conference signalled India's commitment to regional leadership in marine science and emphasised the Bay of Bengal's role in ensuring food security for neighbouring countries.
