Buellia maharajensis: New Rock Lichen from Mathikettan Shola

Why in news?

Researchers described a new lichen species from Mathikettan Shola National Park in Kerala. They named it Buellia maharajensis in a paper published on 2 September 2026. The same study recorded two other Buellia species in Kerala for the first time. These are separate taxonomic and distributional findings.

What is a lichen?

A lichen is a stable partnership centred on a fungus. Photosynthetic algae or cyanobacteria live within its organised body. The photosynthetic partner produces energy-rich compounds. The fungus supplies structure and helps manage water, minerals and exposure.

Lichens grow on bark, rock, soil and other surfaces. Many tolerate conditions that defeat ordinary plants. They absorb much of their water and nutrients directly from their surroundings. This feature can make some lichen communities useful indicators of environmental change.

However, one newly found species cannot prove that an entire forest has clean air. Indicator value depends upon species sensitivity, community patterns and measured conditions. Identification must also be dependable. The present finding is primarily a contribution to taxonomy and geographic knowledge.

What exactly was described?

Buellia maharajensis belongs to the family Caliciaceae. The paper describes it as saxicolous, meaning it grows on rock. It is a crustose lichen, so its body forms a crust attached closely to the surface. Such lichens cannot usually be lifted away as one leafy piece.

The authors compared it with the related Buellia quartziana. They separated the new species using a negative iodine reaction in the medulla. They also identified an aethalea-type exciple and the absence of atranorin. These specialist features concern internal tissue, fruiting structures and lichen chemistry.

A new species description must show a consistent combination of distinguishing characters. Researchers chose this name to honour Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, during its 150th anniversary. Preserved reference material allows other specialists to examine the evidence. Wider collections may refine its relationships and known range.

Two additional Kerala records

The paper also reports Buellia hemispherica and Buellia nilgiriensis from Kerala for the first time. This does not make those two species new to science. It extends their documented distribution into the state. The distinction prevents three different findings from being combined incorrectly.

A first state record can reveal an overlooked habitat or earlier sampling gap. It may also reflect improved identification and access to reference collections. Repeated surveys can show whether a species is widespread or highly local. A single collection should not support a population trend.

Where was the new species found?

Mathikettan Shola National Park lies in Udumbanchola taluk of Idukki district. It covers 12.82 square kilometres in Kerala’s high ranges. The park belongs to the southern Western Ghats. Tamil Nadu lies along its eastern and north-eastern side.

The landscape contains shola forest and adjoining high-elevation vegetation. Sholas are compact evergreen forest patches within a mountain grassland setting. Streams from the park feed tributaries of the Panniyar river. The protected area also lies within a wider elephant movement landscape.

The area was once part of the Cardamom Hill Reserve. Kerala declared it a national park on 10 October 2003. Its small size makes surrounding land use especially relevant. Fire, invasive plants and disturbance beyond the boundary can still influence its habitats.

Why taxonomic work matters

Conservation cannot track organisms that remain unidentified or confused with similar species. A formal description creates a shared reference for future surveys. Distribution records can reveal centres of specialised diversity. They also help managers recognise microhabitats that ordinary vegetation maps may miss.

Rock lichens weather surfaces slowly and contribute to tiny ecological communities. They provide habitat and food for small organisms. Their growth can be extremely slow. Collection should therefore remain limited, documented and consistent with protected-area rules.

The study also shows the value of inspecting less conspicuous life forms. Large mammals often dominate conservation attention. Fungi, lichens and invertebrates can carry equally important ecological information. Continued field taxonomy needs trained specialists, collections and long-term institutional support.

Conclusion

Buellia maharajensis adds a documented species to India’s known lichen diversity. The two Kerala records separately expand state-level distribution knowledge. Their discovery highlights the biological detail held within a small Western Ghats park. Further surveys should test range, habitat needs and conservation status without overstating one collection.
