Why in news?

India’s Prime Minister convened an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in late March 2026 to assess the implications of escalating conflict in West Asia on energy supplies, trade and national security. The CCS discussed measures to protect India’s economic interests and ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the region.

Background

The CCS is the government’s highest decision‑making body on matters related to national security and defence. Chaired by the Prime Minister, it typically includes the Ministers of Defence, Home Affairs, Finance and External Affairs; other ministers may be invited as needed. The committee takes strategic decisions on defence procurement, military operations and internal security, and coordinates responses to crises with economic or geopolitical consequences.

Key points from the meeting

  • Energy security: Given India’s heavy reliance on crude oil from West Asia, the CCS reviewed contingency plans to stabilise supplies and manage price spikes. Discussions covered diversifying import sources and using strategic petroleum reserves.
  • Supply‑chain resilience: Officials assessed potential disruptions to shipping routes and the import of fertilisers, foodstuffs and critical components. Measures to secure alternate routes and build domestic buffers were considered.
  • Safety of Indian nationals: The Ministry of External Affairs briefed the meeting on the welfare of Indian citizens in West Asia and evacuation plans should the situation deteriorate.
  • Inter‑ministerial coordination: A team of ministers and senior officials was tasked with monitoring developments, liaising with international partners and implementing mitigation strategies.

Significance

The meeting highlighted the government’s proactive approach to safeguarding national interests amid global uncertainties. By bringing together key ministries, the CCS ensures that security, economic and diplomatic responses are aligned. Such coordination is essential when external conflicts threaten domestic stability.
