Why in News?

The Uttar Pradesh government signed a memorandum of understanding in early 2026 to convert the historic Chunar Fort in Mirzapur district into a heritage hotel through a ₹150 crore public–private partnership. The aim is to boost tourism and river‑based travel along the Ganges.

Background

Chunar Fort, also called Chandrakanta Chunargarh or Charanadri, sits on a rocky spur overlooking a strategic bend of the Ganges near Varanasi. Tradition attributes its early construction to King Vikramaditya of Ujjain around the 11th century, though evidence of occupation dates back to the 1st century BCE.

  • Strategic Location: Built on steep sandstone bluffs 85 m above the river, the fort commands navigation for mid‑sized boats and controls land routes into eastern India. Its ramparts extend roughly 1.6 km.
  • Political History: The fortress changed hands frequently. Sher Shah Suri took it in 1532; Mughal emperor Humayun besieged it for four months, and Akbar captured it in 1575, later building the west gate. It passed through the Nawabs of Awadh, Kashi rulers and eventually the British, who used it as a cantonment and prison. Maharani Jind Kaur of Punjab was detained here before escaping to Nepal.
  • Architecture: The fort combines Rajput and Indo‑Islamic elements. Defensive features include thick sandstone walls, cannon bastions, a deep well and underground chambers. The Sonwa Mandap pavilion, added by Sher Shah Suri in 1538, contains a 61 m well that once supplied the fort with water.
  • Cultural Associations: Legends connect the hill to King Bali and saint Bharthari, giving the fort a religious aura. Its later name “Charanadri” refers to imprints of divinities’ feet.
  • Heritage Development: The proposed hotel project intends to preserve the structure while converting parts into a 100‑room heritage resort, fostering local employment and heritage conservation.
