Why in news?
The 16th edition of Exercise Vajra Prahar, a joint training exercise between the special forces of India and the United States, is scheduled to take place from 23 February to 15 March 2026 at Bakloh in Himachal Pradesh. The exercise aims to enhance defence cooperation and share best practices for counter‑terrorism and special operations.
Background
Vajra Prahar began in 2010 as part of defence cooperation between India and the United States. It is conducted annually on a rotational basis in India and the US. The exercise involves soldiers from the Indian Army’s Para (Special Forces) and the US Army’s Special Forces (Green Berets). It complements other bilateral exercises such as Yudh Abhyas and demonstrates the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Objectives and features
- Joint tactical training: The exercise includes simulated combat situations, close‑quarters battle, hostage rescue, reconnaissance and air insertion. Participants share techniques for operating in diverse terrains, from mountains to urban settings.
- Interoperability: Training together improves communication and coordination between forces, enabling seamless collaboration during joint operations and humanitarian missions.
- Specialised skills: Specialists exchange knowledge on high‑altitude warfare, explosives handling, marksmanship and advanced field medicine.
Significance
- Strengthening defence ties: Regular joint exercises build mutual trust and understanding, enhancing the strategic partnership between India and the US.
- Capability development: Exposure to each other’s tactics and equipment helps both armies refine their own doctrines and prepare for emerging security challenges.
- Regional security: Cooperation in special forces training contributes to stability in the Indo‑Pacific region by deterring threats and demonstrating commitment to joint action against terrorism.
Conclusion
Exercise Vajra Prahar 2026 will strengthen operational readiness and camaraderie between Indian and US special forces. Continued collaboration in such exercises reinforces the broader defence relationship and contributes to regional security.
