Why in news?

The Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted its biennial firepower exercise, Vayu Shakti‑26, at the Pokhran field firing range near Jaisalmer. The event showcased the air force’s ability to execute complex, integrated operations and was witnessed by President Droupadi Murmu.

Background

Exercise Vayu Shakti is a large‑scale demonstration of the IAF’s combat readiness and tactical capabilities. It usually takes place every two years; the previous edition was held in February 2024. The exercise involves day‑and‑night operations and brings together fighters, transport aircraft, helicopters and air defence systems in realistic scenarios.

Highlights of Vayu Shakti‑26

  • Massive participation: More than 130 aircraft took part, including Rafale, Su‑30 MKI, Mirage‑2000, MiG‑29, Jaguar, Hawk trainers, Mi‑17 transport helicopters, C‑130J and C‑295 transport planes, the indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv and the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand.
  • Integrated operations: For the first time the exercise followed a defined operational storyline, creating a simulated live combat theatre. Offensive air strikes, air defence missions, special forces operations and humanitarian assistance were seamlessly integrated.
  • Atmanirbhar Bharat on display: The exercise showcased indigenously produced equipment and emphasised self‑reliance in defence. Air defence capabilities were demonstrated through coordinated engagements involving airborne platforms and ground‑based systems such as the Akash and Spyder missiles, supported by army air defence assets like L‑70 and M‑777 guns.
  • Distinguished observers: President Droupadi Murmu undertook a sortie in the LCH Prachand, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and senior officials praised the IAF for its precision and professionalism.

Significance

Exercise Vayu Shakti‑26 demonstrates the IAF’s capability to conduct multi‑domain operations and respond rapidly to evolving threats. It reassures the nation about the preparedness of its air arm and highlights India’s progress towards self‑reliance in defence technology. The exercise also serves as a message of deterrence and showcases the professionalism of Indian pilots and ground crews.
