Why in news?
India’s Prime Minister and the French President virtually inaugurated the final assembly line of the Airbus H‑125 light utility helicopter at Vemagal, Karnataka. The facility, operated by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in partnership with Airbus, underscores the deepening strategic cooperation between India and France and strengthens India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities.
Background
The H‑125 is a single‑engine light helicopter from the renowned Écureuil family. It is valued worldwide for its reliability, low maintenance costs and adaptability to multiple roles. Notably, it is the only helicopter to have landed on the summit of Mount Everest, demonstrating exceptional high‑altitude performance. Typical uses include emergency services, law enforcement, aerial filming, tourism, firefighting and passenger transport. Key features include:
- High‑altitude capability: The H‑125 can operate efficiently in hot and high conditions, making it suitable for mountainous or desert environments.
- Operational versatility: Its modular design allows rapid reconfiguration for roles such as rescue, medical evacuation, firefighting or cargo transport.
- Simple and robust construction: The helicopter’s sturdy airframe and reliable engine reduce maintenance burdens.
- Performance: It cruises at about 252 km/h with a range of roughly 662 km.
Final assembly line in India
The new assembly line at Vemagal is part of a broader push to build high‑end defence and aerospace products in India. Highlights from the inauguration include:
- Strategic partnership: French and Indian leaders hailed the facility as a milestone in bilateral cooperation. It follows the earlier collaboration to produce C‑295 transport aircraft in India.
- Investment and jobs: The programme is expected to involve investment exceeding ₹1 000 crore and generate direct and indirect employment for skilled workers.
- Make‑in‑India focus: The project aligns with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, enhancing domestic manufacturing and technology transfer. India aims to become a hub for helicopter assembly and export.
- High‑altitude variant: The H‑125M variant is designed as a force multiplier for high‑altitude missions, offering low acoustic and thermal signatures for reconnaissance and logistics. This capability is crucial for India’s mountain frontiers.
