Why in news?
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) marked its 97th Foundation Day on 16 July 2025. Celebrations and awards highlighted agricultural achievements.
Highlights
- Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan honoured agricultural scientists, calling them modern‑day rishis. National Agricultural Science Awards were presented.
- A “Viksit Krishi” exhibition showcased innovations such as climate‑resilient crop varieties, precision farming tools and value‑added products.
- India’s agricultural output has risen sharply in recent years: paddy production increased from 3.9 million tonnes in the early 2000s to over 8 million tonnes; horticulture and milk production nearly doubled.
- The minister launched the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, setting 500 priority research topics and promoting natural farming, pulses and oilseeds cultivation.
- A 24×7 toll‑free helpline was announced to report fake seeds and pesticides and to resolve farmers’ grievances.
Importance
ICAR plays a vital role in food security through research and education. Recognising scientists and focusing on farmer‑centric research helps align technology with farmers’ needs.
