Why in news?

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is organising the first India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM 2026) at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from 21 to 23 January 2026. The event brings together election officials and experts from around the world to share best practices.

Background

India conducts the world’s largest elections, and its election‑management techniques have become a model for many democracies. The ECI established the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in 2011 to provide training, research and capacity‑building for election officials. With this conference, the ECI hopes to build a global platform for sharing experiences and innovations in running free and fair elections.

Highlights of IICDEM 2026

  • Participation: Nearly 100 delegates from about 70 countries and international organisations will attend. India will host more than 40 bilateral meetings on the sidelines.
  • Thematic groups: Thirty‑six thematic working groups led by India’s chief electoral officers and academics from institutions such as IITs, IIMs and National Law Universities will discuss topics ranging from technology in elections to combating misinformation.
  • ECINET launch: The conference will see the inauguration of ECINET, a digital platform developed by IIIDEM for sharing research, best practices and case studies on election management.
  • Exhibition: A large exhibition at the venue will showcase the scale and complexity of Indian elections, including voter‑education initiatives, electronic voting machines, and logistical planning.
  • Docuseries screening: The ECI will premiere India Decides, a documentary series highlighting the conduct of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the role of various stakeholders in ensuring credibility.

About IIIDEM

  • Training hub: IIIDEM serves as the training and resource arm of the ECI, offering courses and workshops for election officials from India and abroad.
  • Campus: Its 5‑acre campus in Dwarka, New Delhi includes classrooms, a digital library and simulation labs for hands‑on learning.
  • International outreach: The institute has hosted participants from dozens of countries and conducts collaborative programmes with regional electoral associations.

Conclusion

By hosting IICDEM 2026, India is positioning itself as a global hub for election management know‑how. The conference offers an opportunity to learn from each other and to strengthen democratic processes worldwide.
