Why in news?
On 4 February 2026, India formally became part of the BRICS Centre for Industrial Competencies (BCIC), a collaborative platform created by the BRICS nations with support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The BCIC provides a oneโstop centre to support manufacturing companies and micro, small and mediumโsized enterprises (MSMEs) across BRICS countries.
Background
The BRICS grouping (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) has sought to strengthen industrial cooperation among its members. In 2025, the group partnered with UNIDO to launch the BCIC, aiming to build Industry 4.0 capabilities, share best practices and promote advanced manufacturing. Each country hosts a national centre to deliver training and consultancy services to domestic firms. Indiaโs Ministry of Commerce and Industry designated the National Productivity Council (NPC) as the Indian BCIC centre and signed a trust fund agreement with UNIDO.
Key features
- Industry 4.0 focus: BCIC programmes cover automation, digital manufacturing, robotics and smart supply chains. They help firms adopt technologies such as artificial intelligence, 3D printing and industrial Internet of Things.
- Support for MSMEs: The centre provides training, productivity audits, process optimisation and access to expert networks. It aims to raise competitiveness of small businesses and integrate them into global value chains.
- Knowledge sharing: Member countries share case studies and jointly develop curricula, enabling crossโlearning among BRICS firms. UNIDO provides technical assistance and monitors outcomes.
Indiaโs participation in the BCIC is expected to help domestic manufacturers modernise and boost productivity. By leveraging UNIDOโs expertise and collaborating with BRICS partners, the NPC can develop advanced training modules and support MSMEs in adopting Industry 4.0 technologies.
