Why in news?
As part of its outreach to the Caribbean, India delivered portable “Aarogya Maitri” health‑care cubes to Jamaica in April 2026. The deployment supports the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) during disasters and strengthens New Delhi’s humanitarian diplomacy in the region.
About Jamaica
Jamaica is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea lying about 145 kilometres south of Cuba and 190 kilometres west of Hispaniola. The country’s topography comprises:
- Coastal plains: Narrow lowlands that surround the island; many towns and ports, including the capital Kingston, lie here.
- Limestone plateau: An inland belt of limestone hills and caverns known for karst landscapes.
- Blue Mountains: A rugged mountain chain rising to 2,256 m at Blue Mountain Peak, the highest point in Jamaica. The slopes support coffee plantations and tropical forests.
- Rivers: The Black River and Rio Minho are among the longest rivers. They provide irrigation and support wetland ecosystems.
- Natural resources: Bauxite, limestone and gypsum form major mineral exports.
Aarogya Maitri / BHISHM initiative
India announced the Aarogya Maitri project at the Voice of Global South Summit in January 2023. It aims to supply emergency medical equipment to countries affected by disasters or humanitarian crises. Each kit contains modular BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Support during Humanitarian emergencies and Medical aid) cubes. Key features include:
- Modular design: Thirty‑six mini‑cubes combine to form a mother cube. Two mother cubes make a full BHISHM unit capable of treating up to 200 trauma patients.
- Rapid deployment: Cubes are waterproof and shockproof. They can be unpacked and assembled within about twelve minutes.
- Comprehensive care: The kit includes diagnostics, minor surgical equipment, ventilators, defibrillators, ultrasound devices and consumables. Inventory is tracked via radio‑frequency identification (RFID) and a mobile app supports 180 languages.
- Portability: Each mini‑cube weighs around 15 kg, enabling transport by hand or small vehicles across difficult terrain.
Significance of the deployment
- Strengthens India’s engagement with CARICOM countries and showcases South–South cooperation.
- Provides Jamaica with ready‑to‑use emergency health infrastructure for earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters.
- Highlights India’s role as a responsible global partner supplying humanitarian assistance without conditionalities.
