Why in news?

The Indian Navy’s research vessel INS Sagardhwani visited Cam Ranh port in Vietnam on its way back from the Sagar Maitri expedition. During the visit the ship’s crew interacted with Vietnamese naval personnel and conducted joint scientific activities, strengthening maritime cooperation between the two countries.

Background

INS Sagardhwani is a specialised oceanographic research ship operated by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) under DRDO. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and commissioned in July 1994, the vessel collects data on sea conditions, underwater acoustics and marine biology to support naval operations and scientific research.

Key points

  • The ship is participating in Sagar Maitri V, an initiative that promotes oceanographic cooperation, outreach and capacity building with countries of the Indian Ocean Region. The mission aims to enhance understanding of the Indian Ocean environment and share expertise in marine science.
  • During each voyage the vessel hosts joint workshops and training sessions with partner countries. Scientists record temperature, salinity, currents and sound propagation through water, which helps predict monsoon behaviour and improve submarine detection.
  • INS Sagardhwani is equipped with laboratories, winches and sensors for launching oceanographic instruments. Its long service life – over thirty years – reflects India’s investment in indigenous research platforms.
  • Cooperation with Vietnam builds on a strategic partnership that includes defence training, shipbuilding and maritime security. Joint scientific missions foster trust and understanding in the broader Indo‑Pacific region.
