The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini has embarked on Lokayan 26, a ten‑month transoceanic voyage that began on 20 January 2026. The journey will cover more than 22,000 nautical miles, visiting 18 foreign ports across 13 countries and showcasing India’s maritime heritage.

Background

Commissioned in 2012 and based at Kochi, INS Sudarshini is a three‑masted barque built by Goa Shipyard Limited. The ship sails primarily under wind power but is equipped with engines for manoeuvring. Designed as a sail training ship, it provides young sailors with hands‑on experience in traditional seamanship, navigation and teamwork. The Lokayan series of voyages aims to deepen maritime cooperation and promote India’s vision of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family).

Highlights of Lokayan 26

  • Route and duration: The voyage will last ten months, covering approximately 22,000 nautical miles around the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
  • Port visits: INS Sudarshini will call at 18 ports in 13 countries, including stops in Africa, Europe and North America. Notable events include participation in international tall‑ship festivals such as Escale à Sète in France and SAIL 250 in New York, USA.
  • Training: More than 200 trainees from the Indian Navy and Coast Guard will receive practical training in sail handling, ocean navigation and leadership during the voyage. The ship will also host trainees from foreign navies to strengthen professional bonds.
  • Cultural diplomacy: Port calls will include cultural performances and exchanges, promoting goodwill and highlighting India’s seafaring traditions.

Significance

  • Skill development: Long‑distance sail training cultivates resilience, discipline and seamanship among young sailors, qualities essential for modern naval service.
  • International cooperation: By visiting multiple countries and engaging with their navies, INS Sudarshini strengthens maritime partnerships and enhances India’s diplomatic outreach.
  • Showcasing heritage: The voyage underscores India’s centuries‑old maritime traditions and the country’s growing stature as a seafaring nation.

Conclusion

Lokayan 26 is more than a training cruise; it is a journey of friendship and learning that will carry the message of cooperation across oceans. As INS Sudarshini returns home, the experience gained by its trainees and the international goodwill generated will enrich India’s maritime community.
