Why in news?
India and Sweden deepened their cooperation on artificial intelligence on 25 February 2026 by signing a Statement of Intent to create the Sweden–India Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor (SITAC). The agreement, announced at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, aims to connect startups, industry and researchers in both countries and drew attention to Sweden’s role in global innovation.
Background
Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Nordic country located on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. It is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. Sweden joined the European Union in 1995 and became a member of NATO in 2024. Its currency is the Swedish krona.
Geography
- Location and borders: Sweden stretches roughly 1,570 km from north to south. It shares land borders with Norway to the west and Finland to the east. Across the Skagerrak, Kattegat and Öresund straits lies Denmark. The Gulf of Bothnia and the Baltic Sea form its eastern and southern coastlines.
- Terrain and climate: The north is mountainous and partly above the Arctic Circle, while the south features rolling plains, thick forests and over 100,000 lakes. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, much of Sweden enjoys a temperate climate despite its high latitude. In summer the sun barely sets in the far north, earning the region the nickname “land of the midnight sun”.
- Natural resources: Sweden is rich in iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, timber and hydropower. Its forests cover roughly half the country and support a thriving timber industry.
- Capital and major cities: Stockholm, built on a series of islands, is the capital and largest city. Other important urban centres include Gothenburg and Malmö.
Sweden–India AI partnership
The SITAC framework seeks to foster responsible and inclusive AI development. Key elements include organising conferences and workshops, facilitating exchanges between startups and research institutions, arranging field visits to innovation hubs, and identifying opportunities for joint ventures. The partnership aligns Sweden’s strengths in advanced research and responsible AI with India’s vast talent pool and burgeoning digital economy.
