The Ministry of Coal is preparing to launch Koyla Shakti, a Smart Coal Analytics Dashboard designed to serve as a unified, real‑time monitoring platform for India’s coal sector. The announcement was made in late October 2025 as part of efforts to enhance transparency, operational efficiency and data‑driven decision‑making across the coal supply chain.
Background
Coal remains a major source of energy in India, powering more than half of the country’s electricity generation. Managing the production, transport and consumption of coal involves multiple stakeholders—including coal companies, ministries, state departments, power producers and port authorities. Historically, data from these entities has been fragmented, hindering coordination and timely decision‑making. The Koyla Shakti dashboard seeks to integrate disparate information into a single digital interface.
Key features
- Unified visibility: The dashboard will integrate data from coal-producing companies, private miners, ministries such as Coal, Railways and Power, state departments handling mineral production, power utilities and port authorities. This will provide a comprehensive view of supply and demand across the coal ecosystem.
- Real‑time monitoring: Stakeholders will be able to track coal production, dispatch, transportation and logistics in real time. This will help identify bottlenecks and respond promptly to disruptions.
- Data‑driven decisions: Analytical tools built into the platform will support evidence‑based policy formulation and management decisions, including demand forecasting and strategic planning.
- Incident response: The dashboard will generate timely alerts and notifications to help agencies address operational challenges quickly and minimise downtime.
- Standardisation and scalability: Uniform metrics and reporting formats will enhance consistency across departments. The platform is also designed to integrate with future digital systems and additional datasets as needed.
- Transparency and accountability: By making data visible to all stakeholders, Koyla Shakti aims to reduce information asymmetry and promote accountability in the coal sector.
Conclusion
The Koyla Shakti dashboard exemplifies how digital tools can improve governance in traditional industries. By bringing multiple data sources together, the platform is expected to increase efficiency, transparency and coordination across India’s coal value chain.
