Why in news?
A camera trap photographed a Mindoro bleeding-heart pigeon in August 2026. Researchers announced the image on 3 September after confirming the species. It is the first definite photographic record since December 2005. The finding proves recent survival, but it does not show population recovery.
What exactly was recorded?
The photograph came from forest within the Iraya Mangyan ancestral domain on Mindoro. The camera stood above 900 metres, beyond the species’ historically documented elevation. A single ground-dwelling bird appears in the image. Independent ornithologists also examined its identification before wider reporting.
The Center for Conservation Innovations Philippines led the field programme with Iraya Mangyan communities. Local governments of Puerto Galera, San Teodoro and Baco also participated. The work forms part of a wider forest and biodiversity programme. This community partnership matters because cameras operate across lived ancestral land.
Search for Lost Birds identifies December 2005 as the last definite photographic record. A 2016 sound recording was proposed as a possible detection. However, no known reference call allowed a secure identification. The new image therefore closes a gap in confirmed photographic evidence.
About the bird
The species’ scientific name is Gallicolumba platenae. It belongs to the pigeon and dove family, Columbidae. The bird lives mainly on the forest floor. It searches leaf litter for seeds, fallen fruit and small invertebrates.
A coloured breast patch creates the “bleeding-heart” appearance. Greenish iridescent plumage covers parts of the head and upper body. Camouflage and quiet movement make the bird difficult to see. Ground habits also expose it to snares intended for other wildlife.
The Mindoro bleeding-heart is endemic to one Philippine island. Endemic means it occurs naturally nowhere else. Such a restricted range can make habitat loss especially dangerous. A severe local disturbance can affect the entire global population.
Where is Mindoro?

The new elevation expands the area that future surveys should examine. Earlier searches focused strongly on lowland forest. Upland detections may reveal overlooked refuges or occasional movement. One photograph cannot establish the size of that habitat or population.
Camera traps can remain active where human observation is difficult. They also record time and place without capturing an animal. A planned grid can estimate occupancy across suitable forest. Repeated photographs are needed before any abundance trend becomes credible.
The finding also validates Indigenous participation in species searches. Community members know local access routes, forest change and wildlife signs. Their consent and leadership can improve long-term monitoring. Conservation should protect cultural rights alongside habitat.
Threats and next steps
The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the species as Critically Endangered. Historic lowland forest clearance caused a major habitat decline. Logging, land conversion and quarrying continue to threaten remaining areas. Hunting and ground snares add another direct risk.
Researchers now need wider camera coverage above and below 900 metres. Surveys should record vegetation, disturbance and trapping signs. Acoustic work may become useful if a verified call is obtained. Any location details must avoid increasing collection or hunting risk.
Protection cannot rest upon a single camera site. Forest corridors may connect feeding, breeding and seasonal areas. Local patrols need durable finance and community agreement. Restoration should use native vegetation and protect existing mature forest first.
