Why in news?
The National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB) celebrated its 63rd Foundation Day in December 2025. During the event the council released a Carbon Uptake Report jointly prepared with the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and inaugurated a Gypsum Board Testing Laboratory and a Micro‑Characterisation Laboratory. The report quantifies how concrete absorbs carbon dioxide over its lifetime and will contribute to India’s greenhouse‑gas accounting.
Background
The NCB originated as the Cement Research Institute of India in 1962 to promote scientific research in cement production. It is now an apex research and technology organisation under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). With centres in Ballabgarh (Haryana), Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar, the council conducts research, testing, training and consultancy across cement, concrete and building materials. It supports government policy development, quality standards and training programmes for industry professionals.
Highlights of the Foundation Day
- Carbon Uptake Report: The report assesses the natural process of carbonation, whereby concrete absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it cures and throughout its service life. Quantifying this uptake helps present a more accurate picture of the cement industry’s net emissions and can inform national climate reporting.
- New laboratories: A Gypsum Board Testing Laboratory was inaugurated to evaluate fire resistance, acoustic properties and durability of gypsum boards used in construction. A Micro‑Characterisation Laboratory was also opened to study the microstructure of cement and concrete, enabling the development of high‑performance, low‑carbon materials.
- Commitment to sustainability: Speakers emphasised NCB’s role in promoting resource‑efficient cements, alternative raw materials and waste utilisation. The council is working on low‑clinker cements, blended with supplementary materials such as fly ash and slag, to reduce carbon intensity.
About the NCB
- Research and development: NCB undertakes research in cement chemistry, new construction materials, energy efficiency and environmental protection.
- Training and capacity building: It offers courses for engineers and technicians, helping modernise the cement and construction industry.
- Industry services: The council provides testing, quality certification and technical audits for cement plants and construction projects.
- Vision: NCB aims to support the construction of durable infrastructure and affordable housing while reducing the environmental footprint of building materials.
Conclusion
By releasing the Carbon Uptake Report and strengthening its laboratory infrastructure, the National Council for Cement and Building Materials underscores its commitment to sustainability and innovation. Its research and training efforts contribute to greener construction practices and help India meet its climate goals.
