Why in news?
During a visit to the Kanipakam Varasiddhi Vinayaka Temple in Andhra Pradesh, India’s Civil Aviation Minister announced that the Centre is preparing plans to upgrade facilities at major temples in the state under the PRASHAD scheme. The initiative aims to boost spiritual tourism by improving connectivity, sanitation and other amenities around pilgrimage destinations.
Background
The Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) was launched in 2014–15 by the Ministry of Tourism as a Central Sector Scheme. It provides financial assistance to state governments and Union Territories for developing infrastructure at selected pilgrimage and heritage sites. A Mission Directorate within the ministry identifies projects, coordinates with stakeholders and monitors implementation.
Objectives and features
- Integrated development: The scheme aims to create world‑class infrastructure at pilgrimage sites—roads, parking, toilets, accommodation and interpretation centres—while preserving cultural and religious heritage.
- Funding: Projects are financed entirely by the central government for public components. Private contributions through Corporate Social Responsibility and Public–Private Partnerships are encouraged.
- Employment and skills: By upgrading tourist facilities, PRASHAD generates local jobs and encourages skill development in hospitality and service sectors.
- Mission Directorate: A dedicated team within the Ministry of Tourism selects projects, prepares detailed project reports and coordinates with state governments, local bodies and religious trusts.
Developments in Andhra Pradesh
- Plans are underway to enhance facilities around temples such as Kanipakam, Tirumala and Srisailam, improving connectivity, sanitation and visitor services.
- Improved roads and national highway projects will make pilgrimage centres more accessible to devotees and boost tourism revenue.
- The state government expects that better infrastructure will attract investment, create jobs and stimulate regional development.
Conclusion
The PRASHAD scheme demonstrates how infrastructure development can support spiritual and cultural tourism. By partnering with states, the programme seeks to create welcoming pilgrimage hubs that respect heritage while providing modern amenities. Andhra Pradesh’s upcoming projects could serve as a model for other states seeking to tap into spiritual tourism.
