Why in news?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Rashtriya Prerna Sthal in Lucknow. The sprawling complex commemorates the lives and ideas of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Bharatiya Jana Sangh leaders Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Deendayal Upadhyaya. It is intended to inspire citizens to serve the nation and uphold cultural values.
Background
Built on the banks of the Gomti River, the Rashtriya Prerna Sthal occupies about 65 acres of land in Lucknow. At its heart are three towering bronze statues – each 65 feet high and weighing roughly 42 tonnes – depicting Vajpayee, Mookerjee and Upadhyaya. The complex was conceived as a permanent national asset and constructed at an estimated cost of ₹230 crore.
Features of the memorial
- Lotus‑shaped museum: A 98,000 square foot museum sits at the centre of the site. Designed like a lotus, it contains five galleries and twelve interpretation walls that trace the lives and philosophies of the three leaders through photographs, artefacts and digital exhibits.
- Public spaces: The complex includes a 3,000‑seat amphitheatre for cultural events, a meditation hall, a yoga centre, a musical block and a large rally ground. Water bodies and landscaped gardens surround the statues, creating a serene ambience.
- Infrastructure: Facilities such as two helipads, a heliport, parking and utility buildings support large gatherings. The use of modern lighting and digital technology helps convey messages of patriotism and social harmony.
- Purpose: Beyond honouring individual leaders, the memorial aims to encourage citizens to uphold ethical leadership and national service. Exhibits emphasise integral humanism, cultural pride and inclusive governance.
