Why in news?

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) launched the Sanchar Mitra programme to boost digital literacy and cyber awareness in rural India.

Key features

  • Volunteer network: Local youth are trained as “Sanchar Mitra” volunteers to educate citizens on using basic mobile services, UPI payments and grievance redressal portals.
  • Training modules: Volunteers receive training in smartphone usage, online safety, government e‑services and ethical internet practices.
  • Incentives: Small stipends, certificates and recognition encourage sustained participation of volunteers.
  • Community outreach: Door‑to‑door visits, group meetings and awareness camps ensure that older adults, women and vulnerable groups gain digital confidence.
  • Significance: By bridging the digital divide, the scheme seeks to empower rural households to access welfare schemes, e‑commerce and telemedicine services safely.
