Two tourists from Kerala drowned after the frozen surface of Sela Lake in Arunachal Pradesh cracked beneath their feet. The incident, which occurred in mid‑January, has raised concerns about tourist safety at high‑altitude destinations.
Background
Sela Lake, often called Paradise Lake, is a glacial lake situated near Sela Pass in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. At an altitude of about 4,170 metres (13,700 feet), the lake is surrounded by snow‑capped mountains and picturesque landscapes. It usually freezes from late autumn through early spring. The lake is sacred to the indigenous Monpa community and is one of more than a hundred holy lakes in the region.
The incident
- What happened: A group of seven tourists stopped beside the frozen lake to take photographs. When they ventured onto the ice, the surface cracked and four people fell into the icy water. Locals managed to rescue one person, but two others drowned.
- Rescue efforts: Residents rushed to the scene and helped pull the victims from the water. Despite administering CPR, they were unable to revive them. Local authorities later recovered the bodies.
- Safety warnings: The district administration had installed warning boards cautioning visitors not to walk on the frozen lake. Officials emphasised that even seemingly solid ice can be dangerously thin in places.
