It offers financial support and aims to generate evidence‑based recommendations for improving women’s safety and empowerment.

Background

About NCW: The National Commission for Women is a statutory body that advises the Government of India on issues affecting women. It investigates complaints, reviews laws and promotes gender equality.

Key features of the SHAKTI fellowship:

  • Research areas: Fellows can undertake multidisciplinary studies on topics such as women’s safety and dignity, gender‑based violence, legal rights, cyber security, healthcare, education and skill development, economic empowerment, labour force participation, leadership and decision‑making.
  • Eligibility: Indian citizens between 21 and 30 years of age with at least a bachelor’s degree are eligible. Preference is given to candidates with postgraduate degrees or research experience. Women and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
  • Support: Each selected scholar receives a grant of ₹1 lakh to conduct a six‑month research project. Proposals are evaluated by an expert committee, followed by interviews.
  • Application process: Applications must be submitted by 31 December 2025 through the NCW’s online portal. The research must be original and relevant to policy making. At the end of six months, fellows are expected to submit a report and share findings with stakeholders.

Significance

  • Policy impact: The fellowship encourages young scholars to explore pressing gender issues and translate their findings into recommendations for government programmes and laws.
  • Capacity building: By providing financial support and mentorship, it fosters a new generation of researchers who can champion women’s rights and contribute to academia.
  • Awareness: The programme highlights the importance of evidence‑based discussions on issues like cyber safety, workplace harassment and economic empowerment.
