Why in news?

On 23 January 2026 the government announced the winners of the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar for outstanding contributions to disaster management. The awards are declared each year on Netaji’s birth anniversary.

Background

The Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar, instituted in 2019, honours individuals and institutions that excel in disaster preparedness, mitigation and response. It aims to promote a culture of resilience and acknowledge unsung heroes.

2026 awardees

  • Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA): Established in 2005, SSDMA leads disaster risk reduction in Sikkim. It trains Aapda Mitra volunteers at village, block and district levels, and has conducted successful rescue operations during events like the 2016 Mantam landslide and the 2023 Teesta floods. Its community‑based approach ensures preparedness at the grassroots.
  • Lieutenant Colonel Seeta Ashok Shelke: Serving with the Indian Army, Lt Col Shelke led humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in Wayanad, Kerala, during the 2024 floods and landslides. She oversaw the construction of a Bailey bridge over the Kabini River and helped evacuate more than 400 stranded villagers. She has trained over 2,300 cadets and volunteers in flood rescue and disaster response.

Significance

  • The awards highlight the importance of preparedness and rapid response in saving lives during disasters.
  • SSDMA’s emphasis on trained community volunteers shows that local participation is key to effective disaster management.
  • Lt Col Shelke’s leadership illustrates how trained personnel and innovative solutions, like temporary bridges, can restore access and aid quickly.

Conclusion

The 2026 Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar celebrates courage and innovation in disaster management. Recognising these efforts encourages more people and organisations to build resilience and protect communities from natural hazards.
