Why in news?

On 18 November 2025, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry unveiled the Trade Intelligence and Analytics Portal. Designed to put detailed trade statistics at the fingertips of businesses, policymakers and researchers, the portal aims to make India’s trade data more accessible and evidence‑based.

Background

Timely and accurate trade information is essential for exporters to plan shipments, for importers to source competitively and for policymakers to design industrial policies. Until now, much of this data was fragmented across multiple databases and government agencies. The new portal consolidates global and domestic trade statistics into interactive dashboards.

Features

  • Unified data hub: integrates international databases such as UN Comtrade, WTO, ITC TradeMap and national customs statistics. Users can access trade flows by country, commodity or sector.
  • Interactive dashboards: offers more than 270 visualisations across 28 thematic dashboards, including insights on production‑linked incentive sectors, critical minerals and global value chains.
  • Trade indices: calculates indicators such as the Trade Complementarity Index, Revealed Comparative Advantage and Trade Intensity Index to identify export opportunities and import dependencies.
  • Alert systems: monitors surges in imports or exports that may indicate dumping or supply disruptions, enabling authorities to respond quickly.

Significance

  • Empowers small businesses: micro, small and medium enterprises can access data previously available only to large firms, helping them identify markets and benchmark performance.
  • Informs policy: analysts and officials can use real‑time data to design targeted export promotion schemes, monitor the impact of tariffs and evaluate trade agreements.
  • Reduces manual work: by automating data collection and visualisation, the portal saves time and minimises errors in compiling reports.

Conclusion

The Trade Intelligence and Analytics Portal represents a leap forward in data transparency. By bringing together scattered statistics into a user‑friendly platform, it could help businesses make informed decisions and support evidence‑based policymaking.
