Why in news?

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will mark its 80th anniversary on 23 January 2026 with a commemorative event at UN headquarters in New York. The gathering brings together world leaders, Nobel laureates and civil society representatives to reflect on eight decades of multilateral cooperation.

Background

ECOSOC was created in 1945 as one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. Its mandate is to coordinate the organisation’s work on economic, social, cultural, health and related matters. The council has 54 member states elected by the UN General Assembly for three‑year terms and meets throughout the year at UN headquarters. Decisions are made by simple majority. Over the years ECOSOC has provided a forum where governments and stakeholders can discuss issues such as development, human rights, gender equality and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Functions of ECOSOC

  • Policy coordination: ECOSOC coordinates the activities of UN specialised agencies, regional commissions and functional commissions on matters ranging from health and education to trade and environment.
  • Debate and dialogue: It serves as a central platform for discussion of international economic and social issues, encouraging dialogue between governments, academics, NGOs and private sector groups.
  • Recommendations: The council formulates policy recommendations for member states and the UN system on how to tackle global challenges such as poverty, climate change and inequality.
  • Overseeing commissions: ECOSOC oversees subsidiary bodies, including regional commissions like UNESCAP and functional commissions on topics such as narcotic drugs, crime prevention and women’s rights.

80th anniversary commemoration

  • High‑level dialogue: A moderated discussion will feature former heads of state, economists and activists reflecting on ECOSOC’s legacy and the future of global governance.
  • Commemorative stamp: The United Nations Postal Administration will issue a special postage stamp to celebrate the milestone.
  • Call for renewal: Speakers are expected to call for strengthening multilateral cooperation to meet the challenges of climate change, pandemics and widening inequalities.

Conclusion

For eight decades ECOSOC has been central to the UN’s efforts to build a more just and prosperous world. As it enters its ninth decade, the council faces calls to become more inclusive and effective in delivering the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
