Why in news?

Avataar.ai, a Bengaluru‑based startup, launched a video‑generation model named Varya on 12 June 2026. It is supported by the government’s IndiaAI mission. Varya aims to make high‑quality video creation affordable for teachers, small businesses and the government.

Background

Generative AI models can create images, audio and video using machine learning. However they usually require heavy computing resources and are costly to run. Avataar.ai has previously developed visual marketing tools. With support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the company used subsidised cloud computing and open‑source datasets to develop Varya.

Main features

  • Distillation technology: Varya reduces the number of computational steps in video generation from more than 50 to just four. This distillation technique lowers computing costs and speeds up output.
  • Cost efficiency: According to the company, a one‑second video costs about ₹0.48 to generate. This is up to ten times cheaper than comparable models, making it accessible to users with limited budgets.
  • Indian context: The model has been trained to generate scenes featuring Indian festivals, clothing, food and landscapes. It can be used for educational videos, government campaigns and small business advertising.
  • Public–private collaboration: The IndiaAI mission provided compute credits and guidance. Officials say that Varya’s launch shows how startups can build on national digital infrastructure to create indigenous AI solutions.
