WT-MARUT: Wind Turbine Supply Chain Portal & Renewable Energy

Why in news?

On 15 June 2026 the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy launched India’s first wind‑turbine supply‑chain portal, called WT‑MARUT, at a Global Wind Day event in Goa. The portal aims to improve visibility into component sourcing, support domestic manufacturing and prepare India’s wind industry for export opportunities. Union minister Pralhad Joshi unveiled the platform alongside industry leaders.

Background

India has installed over 56 gigawatts of wind power capacity and added a record 6.1 GW in fiscal 2025‑26. The government wants to expand wind generation while developing a robust local manufacturing base. However, the supply chain is fragmented and companies struggle to trace components and comply with domestic content rules under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). The Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association, working with the National Institute of Wind Energy, developed the WT‑MARUT portal to address these challenges.

Features and objectives

  • Supply‑chain transparency: Manufacturers and project developers can track the origin and quality of blades, nacelles, towers, gearboxes and other components.
  • Compliance with domestic rules: The portal helps firms meet ALMM requirements by verifying that components are sourced from approved Indian suppliers.
  • Supplier discovery: A searchable database allows buyers to identify qualified suppliers and encourages smaller enterprises to enter the wind value chain.
  • Export readiness: By mapping capacities and quality certifications, the portal positions Indian companies to supply turbines and parts to global markets.
  • Data security: Industry data are hosted on government servers to protect sensitive commercial information.

Conclusion

WT‑MARUT is an important step towards making India a global hub for wind‑turbine manufacturing. By bringing transparency and standardisation to the supply chain it will help developers plan projects, support compliance and strengthen export potential. A vibrant wind industry is vital for achieving India’s renewable energy targets.
