Why in news?
On 28 May 2026 officials from India and Singapore met in Singapore for their 16th Defence Policy Dialogue. The talks were co‑chaired by India’s Defence Secretary and Singapore’s Permanent Secretary for Defence. They reviewed ongoing cooperation and discussed emerging areas such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, maritime security and joint exercises in the Indo‑Pacific. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a rules‑based order and to multilateral cooperation under ASEAN frameworks.
Background
Singapore is a small island city‑state at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula between Malaysia and Indonesia. Its location along the Straits of Malacca has made it one of the world’s busiest ports. The terrain is mostly low‑lying, with gently undulating hills and a tropical climate marked by north‑eastern and south‑western monsoons. The highest natural point, Bukit Timah, rises only 164 metres above sea level. Singapore gained independence in 1965 and has since developed into a major financial and technological hub.
Defence relations and key outcomes
- Long‑standing partnership: India and Singapore signed a defence cooperation agreement in 2003. The dialogue mechanism allows regular reviews of joint exercises, training and port calls. India trains Singaporean forces at the Air Force Station in Kalaikunda and the Armoured Training Institute in Babina.
- New domains: The 2026 meeting emphasised collaboration in cyber defence, artificial intelligence and space technologies. Both sides recognise that protecting critical infrastructure and data networks is as important as securing sea‑lanes.
- Maritime security: India and Singapore agreed to strengthen maritime domain awareness and cooperate on freedom of navigation operations in the Indo‑Pacific. They support adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and maintaining open sea lines of communication.
- Multilateral engagement: The two countries reaffirmed their support for ASEAN‑led mechanisms such as the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting‑Plus. They will continue participating in the Singapore‑India – Thailand maritime exercise (SITMEX) and other regional initiatives.
