Indiahandmade Portal: GI Tags, ODOP & Digital Marketplace

Why in news?

  • The government’s Indiahandmade platform continues to gain attention as an online marketplace that directly connects weavers and artisans with buyers.
  • It showcases Geographical Indication (GI) and One District One Product items, helping artisans reach new markets without middlemen.
  • The platform aims to support lakhs of artisans by offering fair prices and modern logistics, reflecting the government’s focus on digital empowerment.

Background

The Indiahandmade portal was launched in 2023 by the Digital India Corporation under the Ministry of Textiles. It was created to address challenges faced by traditional craftspeople, such as limited market access and exploitation by middlemen. India has over 64 lakh artisans, most of whom are women, and their livelihoods depend on the sale of hand‑loom and handicraft products. A digital marketplace allows them to sell directly, increasing their earnings and preserving cultural heritage.

Key features and significance

  • Direct connection: Buyers can purchase products directly from artisans. There are no intermediaries, ensuring better prices for sellers.
  • Diverse catalogue: The portal lists hand‑loom fabrics, textiles, ornaments and handicrafts from across India. Products with GI tags and those identified as One District One Product are prominently displayed.
  • Seller‑friendly onboarding: The portal offers a simple registration process. Artisans can register using Aadhaar and bank account details, upload photographs of their products and start selling quickly.
  • Empowerment of women: A majority of India’s artisans are women. By giving them access to digital commerce, the platform helps promote financial independence and social uplift.
  • Export potential: The portal links with logistics partners so that products can be shipped within India and abroad. This opens up international markets for rural artisans.
  • Preserving heritage: By creating demand for traditional crafts, the platform encourages the younger generation to continue family traditions and helps safeguard intangible cultural heritage.

Conclusion

Indiahandmade demonstrates how digital initiatives can preserve cultural heritage while providing income for rural artisans. By expanding product categories and improving logistics, the platform can become a one‑stop shop for authentic Indian handicrafts. Continuous support through training and marketing will help artisans compete in both domestic and global markets.
