Why in News?
India’s Prime Minister congratulated Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on winning a third consecutive term in the general elections held in February 2026. The exchange of messages highlighted friendly relations between the two Commonwealth nations.
Background
Barbados is a small island nation in the eastern Caribbean. Formerly a British colony, it gained independence in 1966 and became a republic within the Commonwealth in 2021.
- Location: The island lies east of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and northeast of Trinidad and Tobago. It is the easternmost of the Lesser Antilles, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.
- Area and Population: Barbados covers about 432 km² and is home to roughly 290,000 people. The capital and largest city is Bridgetown.
- Political Status: Barbados gained independence from Britain on 30 November 1966. On 30 November 2021 it replaced the British monarch with a ceremonial president but remains a member of the Commonwealth.
- Geography and Climate: The terrain consists of gently rolling coral‑limestone plains with low hills. Mount Hillaby, at 340 m, is the highest point. The climate is tropical monsoon with a wet season (July–November) and dry season (December–June).
- Natural Resources: The island’s resources include small quantities of petroleum and natural gas, fish and fertile soil that supports sugar‑cane cultivation. Tourism and international business services are major economic drivers.
