UN CSW 70: India's Delegation, Gender Equality & IBSA Fund

Why in News? The Government of India announced that a delegation led by Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, will attend the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York. The session runs from 9 to 19 March 2026 and focuses on ensuring access to justice for women and girls.

Background

The Commission on the Status of Women is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Established in 1946, it is the principal global body dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. Each year, member states review progress, share good practices and agree on actions to advance women’s rights.

Highlights of CSW‑70

  • The priority theme of the 70th session is “Achieving access to justice for all women and girls, and eliminating discriminatory laws and practices.” This includes discussions on legal reforms, inclusive judicial systems and support for survivors of gender‑based violence.
  • India’s delegation will showcase national initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Mission Shakti and the recently enacted laws against trafficking. It will also highlight digital inclusion programmes for women.
  • A side event organised by the IBSA Fund (India‑Brazil‑South Africa) will demonstrate how South‑South cooperation can address gender inequality and support resilient communities.
  • Delegates will participate in negotiations to finalise the Agreed Conclusions, which contain recommendations for governments and international organisations.

India’s participation underscores its commitment to global gender equality. The CSW platform also allows nations to collaborate on emerging challenges such as technology‑facilitated violence and climate change impacts on women.
