India joins US-led effort to shape future 6G networks
Where it stands
India has joined a 26-country effort on future 6G mobile networks. The US Commerce Department announced India’s participation after a meeting at the G20 Innovation Ministerial. The participants include India, the US and 24 other countries. The stated aims cover network security, competitiveness and innovation. The announcement concerns cooperation on a future technology, not a commercial 6G service. Global work on technical standards is still under way. The department’s statement does not announce a common budget or a network launch date.
Background
6G means the sixth generation of mobile communication systems. The International Telecommunication Union uses the name IMT-2030 for this generation. The union published the framework for developing 6G standards in December 2023. Common standards help equipment from different makers work together. Proposals for candidate radio technologies are due between February 2027 and February 2029. A cooperation announcement does not replace that international evaluation process.
