Western Freight Corridor completes rail link from Dadri to Mumbai port
Where it stands
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is complete and fully operational. The final 326 km opened on 8 September 2026. The 1,506 km railway links Dadri in Uttar Pradesh with Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai. Freight trains can now use a continuous route built for goods traffic. On ordinary railway routes, goods trains share track capacity with passenger services. Separating the traffic is expected to reduce delays and ease congestion. Faster, more predictable journeys can also lower transport costs for businesses. These are expected benefits of the completed corridor, not measured savings already achieved.
Background
Factories need dependable transport to move raw materials and finished goods. Ports connect those supply chains with overseas markets. When freight and passenger trains share railway capacity, both services compete for space on the tracks. A dedicated freight corridor provides a separate route for goods trains. The western corridor connects northern India with Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Completing the missing sections makes that dedicated route continuous to the port.

Goods trains now have a continuous dedicated route between Dadri and Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Japan supported the project through financing and technical cooperation. The completed line is fully electrified and designed for high-capacity freight traffic. Separating goods and passenger traffic is expected to improve reliability on the wider railway network.
