Where it stands

The World Meteorological Organization released its annual air-quality bulletin on 7 September 2026. The bulletin examines observations and research concerning 2025. Wildfire smoke and heat can weaken progress from cutting other pollution sources. The report links heatwaves with conditions favouring ground-level ozone. Fine particles can travel far from a fire or an industrial source. Air pollution and climate change therefore need coordinated action. The bulletin is not a forecast of current pollution in any Indian city.

Background

Air quality concerns pollutants in the air people breathe. Climate describes longer-term patterns in the Earth’s system. Some pollutants connect the two. Wildfires release fine particles. Heat and sunlight can favour reactions that form ozone near the ground. That ozone can harm health and crops. Ozone higher in the atmosphere has a different role: shielding Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
