EPFO adds WhatsApp account services and automatic payment of small balances
Where it stands
EPFO has launched a WhatsApp service for checking provident-fund balances, recent transactions and passbook information. It also introduced automatic settlement for eligible inoperative accounts containing up to ₹1,000. Both services were launched on 1 November 2026. The payment change removes the need for these account holders to file an individual claim. EPFO will start the process after the prescribed identity and bank-account checks. The facility covers Aadhaar-verified inoperative accounts, so both the account’s status and its balance matter. Consider an eligible account containing ₹800. Once the required checks succeed, EPFO can initiate payment of that balance without a fresh claim from the member. The benefit is easier access to money already belonging to the worker. The ministry expects around one lakh accounts, holding about ₹5 crore in total, to benefit. The WhatsApp service addresses a different everyday difficulty: obtaining account information. Members can view their latest five transactions and passbook details through EPFO’s verified service. This adds a familiar mobile channel to the organisation’s existing online services.
Background
A provident fund helps workers build savings during their working lives. Contributions enter the account, and the account record shows the money credited and available. EPFO administers this system for covered employees and also handles claims for payment under its rules. Accessing those savings involves more than having a balance. EPFO needs to establish who owns the account and where an authorised payment should go. A claim ordinarily gives the organisation a request to examine. For the eligible small accounts, the new facility shifts that first step to EPFO itself. An inoperative account is a defined category under provident-fund rules. For retirement cases, it follows three years without contributions after age 55 or retirement, whichever is later. Simply leaving a job does not make every account immediately eligible for the new payment facility. This distinction matters when deciding which small balances can be settled automatically. The WhatsApp facility concerns access to information. A passbook helps a member follow contributions and other entries over time. Making those records easier to obtain can help workers notice a missing contribution or understand their balance. It can also reduce the effort involved in routine enquiries.
How it developed

1 November 2026How it started
The launch takes the small-account initiative into service
EPFO’s board had approved a pilot for automatic settlement of small inoperative accounts in March 2026. The November launch brings the facility into service for eligible Aadhaar-verified accounts with balances up to ₹1,000. The accompanying WhatsApp service gives access to balances, passbooks and recent transactions. It also offers guidance on requirements under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana. Together, the two changes address the effort needed to obtain account information and to receive eligible small balances.
Why it matters for UPSC
For GS2, connect social security with accessible public services. Explain how automatic initiation changes the claim process, while identity and bank verification establish the rightful recipient. Distinguish easier access to existing savings from an increase in entitlement.
