Where it stands

India’s new ocean research vessel, Sagar Manthan, was launched in Kolkata on 9 September 2026. Launch means the vessel entered the water for the next construction phase; it has not begun operational research. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers is building it for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research. The ship will support seabed surveys, water sampling and atmospheric observations. Its superstructure, systems and sea trials still need completion. Delivery for commissioning is scheduled for 2028. The vessel is intended to gradually replace the ageing Sagar Kanya, not withdraw that older ship immediately.

Background

Studying the ocean requires more than images of its surface. Scientists need measurements of seawater, the atmosphere and the seabed. Research ships carry instruments and laboratories to collect those observations during voyages. India’s Sagar Kanya has served this purpose since 1983. As that vessel ages, the country needs a newer platform for demanding surveys. Sagar Manthan is being built domestically under the Deep Ocean Mission. Its planned capabilities would help collect scientific data, but launching the hull is only one step towards a usable research ship.

    How it started

    A domestic shipbuilding project prepares to replace an ageing platform

    The construction contract was signed in July 2024. Steel cutting followed on 29 November 2024, and the keel was laid on 8 April 2026. These stages turned the design into the vessel’s physical structure. The project forms part of the Deep Ocean Mission’s survey and exploration work. The ministry plans a gradual replacement of Sagar Kanya, which entered service in 1983.

    Launch begins the next construction phase, not research operations

    On 9 September 2026, Sagar Manthan entered the water at Kolkata’s Rishi Bankim Shipyard. The launch moved the vessel towards further construction and equipment installation. Superstructure work, system integration and extensive sea trials will follow. Delivery for commissioning to NCPOR is scheduled for 2028. Its planned tools include seabed-mapping systems, water sampling equipment and facilities for underwater vehicles. These capabilities will become operational only after the remaining work and tests.

A remotely operated vehicle is controlled from a supporting platform; an autonomous vehicle follows programmed tasks. Sagar Manthan is designed with deployment facilities for both. These are tools carried by the ship, not alternative names for the ship.
Environmental baselineMeasurements describing conditions before a later activity or change. Repeated measurements can then show what changed. Establishing ocean baselines is a planned research role; collecting them does not itself prove that future resource extraction would be harmless.
