Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated a new BioNEST incubation centre at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR‑CFTRI) in Mysuru. The facility aims to strengthen India’s food‑technology startup ecosystem and promote innovation in nutrition, precision fermentation and bio‑processing.
Background
BioNEST (Bio‑incubators Nurturing Entrepreneurship for Scaling Technologies) is a flagship programme of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). Launched in 2017, it supports startups in biotechnology, healthcare, agriculture, clean energy and allied sectors by providing laboratory space, mentoring, regulatory guidance and connections to investors. More than 60 bio‑incubators across India with a combined area of 6.5 lakh square feet have been established under BioNEST, fostering hundreds of early‑stage companies.
Features of the CFTRI incubator
- Modern infrastructure: The Mysuru facility includes shared laboratories, pilot‑scale processing lines and dedicated incubation suites. Startups can access equipment for fermentation, drying, packaging and quality testing.
- Focus areas: CFTRI encourages ventures working on nutraceuticals, probiotics, post‑biotics, precision fermentation, CRISPR technologies and traditional botanicals. Such technologies are poised to transform dietary supplements, functional foods and sustainable protein sources.
- Early success: By April 2026 the incubator had supported 26 startups. Twelve patents were filed and several technologies licensed. Partnerships with industry and academia help translate research into marketable products.
- Capacity building: Training programmes and seminars are organised for entrepreneurs on regulatory compliance, intellectual property, funding opportunities and digital marketing.

- Strengthening the food‑tech ecosystem: India’s food sector is poised for rapid growth due to rising health awareness and demand for plant‑based proteins. An incubator dedicated to food and biotech fosters innovation and job creation.
