Recent health reporting has renewed attention to nerve damage linked with excessive vitamin B6 supplements. The concern involves sustained high intake, not ordinary food consumption. Several products can contain the vitamin, including multivitamins and some magnesium formulations. Users may therefore combine doses without recognising their total daily intake.

What vitamin B6 does

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin covering several closely related compounds. Pyridoxine is common in supplements and fortified foods. Pyridoxal 5′-phosphate is its principal active coenzyme form. Regular dietary intake normally maintains adequate levels.

The vitamin assists more than one hundred enzyme reactions. Many reactions concern protein and amino-acid metabolism. It also supports haemoglobin formation, immune function and neurotransmitter production. These roles explain why both deficiency and excess can affect the nervous system.

Useful food sources include fish, poultry, liver, chickpeas and potatoes. Other starchy vegetables, non-citrus fruits and fortified cereals also contribute. A varied diet normally provides adequate amounts. Toxicity has not been associated with naturally occurring vitamin B6 in food.

Deficiency is uncommon among healthy people eating varied diets. It can occur with kidney disease, malabsorption, alcohol dependence or certain medicines. Possible signs include anaemia, inflamed skin, a sore tongue and confusion. Deficiency itself can sometimes contribute to peripheral neuropathy.

How excessive intake causes harm

Long-term exposure to high supplemental doses can injure sensory nerves. Early symptoms may include tingling, burning or numbness in hands and feet. Severe cases can disturb balance and walking. Recovery may be slow, and some damage can persist.

Why safety limits differ

Regulators use different evidence and safety factors when setting upper levels. The United States Food and Nutrition Board set 100 milligrams daily for adults. The European Food Safety Authority adopted 12 milligrams daily in 2023. These values address long-term population risk, not immediate poisoning.

The United Kingdom advises avoiding more than ten milligrams daily from supplements without medical direction. Australia now requires warnings on many products supplying more than ten milligrams. It also limits the maximum permitted daily dose to 100 milligrams. Regulatory differences should encourage caution, not selective use of the highest figure.

Upper levels also differ from recommended dietary allowances. The allowance estimates an amount meeting nutritional needs. The upper level marks a boundary for rising harm risk. It is not a target and offers no extra benefit by itself.

Practical and clinical implications

People should add the vitamin B6 amounts across every daily supplement. A clinician can assess whether a supplement has a sound indication. New numbness, tingling or balance problems require medical review. Stopping or changing treatment should follow professional advice when a medicine is involved.

Manufacturers should display the total amount clearly and avoid vague wellness claims. Pharmacists can help identify duplicate ingredients. Regulators need reports of suspected adverse effects to detect patterns. Better label awareness may prevent avoidable nerve injury.

Vitamin B6 also has legitimate clinical uses under supervision. These include treating proven deficiency and selected pregnancy-related nausea. Such use does not validate unrestricted high dosing. Benefit depends upon the condition, preparation and carefully chosen amount.

Vitamin B6 is essential, but more is not automatically better. Normal foods provide it safely for most healthy people. Risk rises when concentrated supplements are combined or used for long periods.
