Where it stands

The Reserve Bank of India launched new payment and support facilities for UPI on 10 September 2026. Tap & Pay lets an unlocked, compatible smartphone make a payment by touching a compatible shop terminal. The phone does not need mobile internet, because the terminal supplies the connection. Payments up to ₹5,000 can proceed without a UPI PIN; larger payments require the PIN at the terminal. Separately, MyUPI brings transactions and recurring-payment permissions across banks and apps into one view. It also provides controls for suspected account compromise and eligible payment complaints. These are additional facilities, not an announced replacement for ordinary QR-code payments.

Background

UPI connects participating bank accounts and payment apps so users can transfer money without entering full bank details each time. At a shop, a QR code identifies where the payment should go. A contactless system can exchange that information over a short-range wireless link instead. Earlier UPI tap facilities used NFC tags; the new launch concerns payments at compatible point-of-sale terminals. Support presents another problem: people may use several banks and apps, making their payment history harder to follow. MyUPI addresses that fragmentation with a combined view and tools for managing problems.

How it developed

  1. Earlier context: QR payments and NFC-tag payments
    How it started

UPI already offered several ways to identify a payee

UPI lets users link participating accounts to a payment app. Payments can use a QR code, a UPI address or other supported identifiers. NPCI’s earlier Tap & Pay product used NFC tags to capture the recipient’s payment address. That was not the same as the new phone-to-terminal arrangement. The distinction matters because a familiar product name can hide a different payment flow. A user still needs the hardware and participating service required for the particular facility; a launch announcement does not make every existing phone compatible.

  2. 10 September 2026: Tap & Pay on POS and MyUPI launched
    New fact

New terminal payments use the merchant’s internet connection

The new Tap & Pay facility was launched on 10 September 2026. Users unlock an NFC-enabled smartphone and tap an NFC-enabled point-of-sale terminal. The terminal’s internet connection carries the transaction, so the phone can be offline. UPI-linked accounts, including RuPay credit cards on UPI, are supported. The PIN-free threshold is ₹5,000; above it, the UPI PIN is entered at the terminal. MyUPI adds a separate combined view of transactions and AutoPay mandates. Its Safety Switch lets users request that UPI debits be declined if they suspect compromise. Automated complaint processing applies to eligible transactions, not guaranteed refunds.

Why it matters for UPSC

For GS3, connect digital payment infrastructure with interoperability, connectivity and consumer protection. Distinguish a payment method from the money it transfers. Explain why a new support feature or complaint request does not guarantee a refund or universal availability across devices.

Key terms

Unified Payments InterfaceUPI is the instant-payment system developed by NPCI. It connects participating accounts through compatible payment apps. UPI is the mechanism used to move money, not a separate currency. A new way to initiate a UPI payment does not necessarily change the underlying account.
Near-field communicationNFC is a short-range wireless link between compatible devices. Here, it allows a phone and a shop’s payment terminal to communicate when brought close together. Both devices need the required capability; NFC cannot be added to an incompatible phone simply by announcing a new feature.
Point-of-sale terminalThe merchant’s checkout device used to accept a payment. In the newly launched UPI flow, a compatible terminal provides the internet connection. “The phone can be offline” therefore does not mean that the entire payment system works without any network connection.
UPI PINThe secret code used to authorise a UPI payment when required. The new terminal-payment facility has a PIN-free threshold of ₹5,000. Above that threshold, the PIN is entered on the terminal. This rule belongs to the specified facility, not automatically to every UPI payment method.
AutoPay mandatePermission for a recurring payment, such as a subscription, under agreed terms. It is different from a one-time transfer. MyUPI’s combined view is intended to make these permissions easier to see across banks and apps, alongside transaction history.
Safety SwitchA MyUPI control through which users can request that UPI debit transactions be declined when they suspect compromise. A debit sends money out. This protective request should not be confused with recovering money already lost or closing the underlying bank account.
Chargeback processingA process for raising and handling a disputed-payment request. The new facility can create such requests for eligible transactions. Faster creation is not the same as an approved refund: eligibility, investigation and the applicable payment rules still matter.
UPI Number DelinkA control for disconnecting a mobile number from receiving UPI payments through that number. It concerns a payment identifier. It does not mean cancelling the mobile connection, deleting every UPI app or closing the user’s bank account.
