Where it stands

Agniveers who were due to leave after four years will be offered another two years of service if they wish. The Cabinet approved this change on 4 November 2026. Agniveers are personnel recruited under the armed forces’ Agnipath scheme for an initial four-year engagement. The earlier arrangement allowed 25% to enter regular service on merit. The remaining 75% were expected to leave the forces after four years. That first route continues. The change gives the remaining group a second engagement instead of requiring their departure at that point. After the extra two years, willing personnel can enter regular service if they meet the selection criteria. This gives someone outside the first selected group another route to a longer military career. The second engagement will also bring higher pay, a larger Seva Nidhi exit package, the Defence Ministry said.

Background

The government introduced Agnipath in 2022 to recruit personnel into the Army, Navy and Air Force. Recruits are called Agniveers and serve an initial four-year period. Their performance is assessed for possible selection into the regular ranks. Under the original arrangement, only a quarter of each batch could move into regular service. Others would complete their engagement and return to civilian life with the scheme’s financial package. The approaching end of the first batches’ four years made that exit point an immediate issue. The new decision changes what happens to the group outside the first selection. Willing members can serve two more years and then seek regular enrolment under the applicable criteria. The distinction between the initial engagement, the second engagement and regular service explains the new career path.

    How it started

The Cabinet adds a second engagement for the remaining group

The Defence Ministry said the first 25% will continue to be offered regular employment on merit. The remaining 75% will be offered a further two-year engagement based on willingness. Regular enrolment after that period remains subject to willingness and meeting selection criteria. The ministry linked the decision to feedback from the armed forces on Agniveers’ performance. It also announced better pay and an enhanced Seva Nidhi exit package for the second engagement.

Key terms

AgnipathThe armed forces’ recruitment scheme introduced in 2022. Personnel recruited through it are called Agniveers and initially serve for four years. The new decision adds another engagement route after that period.
AgniveerA person recruited under Agnipath. The term identifies the recruit’s service arrangement. The policy distinguishes the initial four-year engagement from later regular service.
Second engagementThe additional two-year service period offered to the 75% outside the initial regular-service selection. Taking this route depends on willingness. Later regular enrolment also depends on meeting selection criteria.
Regular serviceContinued employment in the armed forces’ regular ranks after selection. It is a different service arrangement from the initial Agniveer engagement. The first merit-based route and the new later route both lead towards these ranks.
Seva NidhiThe financial package provided under Agnipath at the end of the relevant engagement. The Defence Ministry says the second engagement will have an enhanced package.
